Irma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School (YWLS) was the first public, all-girls high school in Texas. The school is named after Irma Lerma Rangel, the first Mexican-American woman elected to the Texas House of Representatives and the first woman elected as chair of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus.
The school opened its doors in 2004 after the Young Women's Preparatory Network (YWPN), established by philanthropists Lee and Sally Posey, partnered with the Dallas Independent School District to open a public, all-girls school, similar to the Young Women's Leadership School in East Harlem. Irma Rangel YWLS is a member of the Young Women's Preparatory Network, a nonprofit organization that partners with public school districts to operate the largest network of all-girls, public, college-preparatory schools in the nation. |
All YWPN schools feature a STEM-focused curriculum and a majority of the students are economically disadvantaged. The YWPN also funds programs and maintains relationships with other institutions in the network, which enables alumnae to establish professional connections after graduation.
Irma Rangel YWLS is also a member of the National Coalition of Girls' School and an affiliate school of the Young Women's Leadership Network.
